2014 TENTATIVE RACING SCHEDULE:
TBD

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run 6-days a week and maintain a decent base level of fitness. Upwards of 50-60 per week would be great. Adjust to my new work position, use time wisely, and keep negative stress at bay. Hopefully make a good run at Ogden this spring.

Balance family, work, running, and the other important things in my life.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy running and continue doing it consistently. Stay healthy and avoid injury as much as possible. Have fun!

Continue chasing PRs while I still can, particularly in the marathon and half marathon. Explore new races, improve training, build friendships, and learn from the wisdom and experience of the numerous great runners here in Utah. Run well into my old age.

Personal:

I live in Sandy, UT with my wife (Lindsay) and 2 kids. I love running the roads through my neighborhood and near Little Cottonwood Canyon. I also do a fair amount of treadmill running at the Life Centre Athletic Club. Aside from running, I love road and moutain cycling.

A.M. - Still feeling like trash due to the cold. Ran on the treadmill at the Life Centre, with limited lung capacity:

5 minutes @ 9.0 mph, flat

5 mins @ 9.5, flat

5 mins @ 10.0, flat

5 mins @ 10.0, 0.5 incline

5 mins @ 10.0, 1.0 incline

5 mins @ 10.0, 1.5 incline

5 mins @ 10.0, 2.0 incline (had enough of the incline at this point)

10 mins @ 10.0, flat (even this segment felt tough)

5 mins @ 9.0, flat

5 mins @ 9.5, flat

5 mins @ 10.0, flat

Was happy to have run for 60 mins and got in at least 9 miles.

A.M. - Rang in Thanksgiving with a nice running date with my wife at the Thankful 13 Half Marathon in Lehi/American Fork. The last time we actually ran together was last Thanksgiving at the Human Race 5K.

My sister in-law came to our house early this morning to stay with the kids. We got down to the race at ~7:15 and got signed-up. It was windy and cold and I was beginning to think I was severely under-dressed, but by mile 4 I felt dressed perfectly.

At the start, I saw Walter, a few ward members (Angela Scott, Kendra Davis, Jamie Ross), and a few other familiar faces. There seemed to be a fair turn-out, but not a ton of people for the innagural running of this race. Most folks probably had the same idea we did... burn a few calories running a half marathon this morning and feel more justified this afternoon as we gorge ourselves!

The start and finish is at the MATC which is close to Thanksgiving Point. The first mile is running in a west/north direction on Ashton Blvd and Executive Pkwy. Then you go over the train tracks and start going south. The remainder of the run is through neighborhoods, mostly on the Provo/Jordan River Parkway Trail. At around mile 6.5, you do a little loop and start heading back north along a similar, but not the exact same, route as you had come out. The course is mostly flat with a handful of rollers and a few sections of moderate climbs/descents.  Lots of turns and winding around. To race it, I definitely wouldn't dub this a PR course. Especially on a windy day like today. I haven't seen what the winning time was yet.

Linds did a great job. Her goal, given today's conditions, was to break 2 hours. She set the pace the whole way. My job was to provide the moral support. The first 7 miles were real consistent at just over 8 minute miles. Miles 8-12 were considerably slower because of the strong headwind. The last mile was faster. We ended up coming in about ~1:51, well ahead of the goal.

Great morning. Lots of fun to do a chill run and be with my wife. So grateful for her, my wonderful family, and the whole host of other blessings in my life. Happy Thanksgiving!

A.M. - Extended my 15-mile route by a mile. This was my longest run since SGM. Pretty good mileage week for me for this time of year. The temps were pretty cold starting out but warmed up to the point where I felt maybe a little over-dressed toward the end. While running north on Wasatch, it looked like there was quite a bit of haze setting in over the city and north end of the valley, but where I was at and to the west of me it was nice and clear. I've never really noticed half and half conditions like that before. Usually, it seems like the whole valley is hazy or its not.
