2014 TENTATIVE RACING SCHEDULE:
TBD

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run 6-days a week and maintain a decent base level of fitness. Upwards of 50-60 per week would be great. Adjust to my new work position, use time wisely, and keep negative stress at bay. Hopefully make a good run at Ogden this spring.

Balance family, work, running, and the other important things in my life.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy running and continue doing it consistently. Stay healthy and avoid injury as much as possible. Have fun!

Continue chasing PRs while I still can, particularly in the marathon and half marathon. Explore new races, improve training, build friendships, and learn from the wisdom and experience of the numerous great runners here in Utah. Run well into my old age.

Personal:

I live in Sandy, UT with my wife (Lindsay) and 2 kids. I love running the roads through my neighborhood and near Little Cottonwood Canyon. I also do a fair amount of treadmill running at the Life Centre Athletic Club. Aside from running, I love road and moutain cycling.

A.M. - Out-and-back on the Paseo Del Bosque Trail (north). Easy pace again. Weather down here in ABQ is nice. It seems a bit smoky though, but I'm not aware of any wildfires around here.

Found out that my wife and I got into the Ogden Marathon in May! We put in for the lottery as a group with a bunch of friends and got in. It should be fun. I've done the half once (bandit 2010) and loved it, but I've never done the full. I've heard a lot of good things about it. It will be my first spring marathon. It'll be interesting training simultaneously with my wife and doing it during my 'busy season,' especially with all of the traveling I'm going to be doing this year (hopefully I don't get too fat). I'm excited though.

A.M. - My go-to 15-mile route. Felt good. My longest run since St. George. 6:49 ave/mi. pace.

Weekly mileage is hovering right about where I want it to be this time of year (~50+). No fancy workouts. All I want is consistent, easy, injury free running.

In ABQ

A.M. - Out-and-back via Central Ave. and the Bosque Del Paseo trail (north). My flight got in late last night. The rest of the team is flying in this morning. So I was able to sleep in a little bit. If there is a silver-lining about being down here its that the morning weather/temps have been nice and cool and great for running. They've been nice in Salt Lake too.

Intended to hold the 11.0 effort for the last 15 mins, but the effort was feeling a bit hard and I didn't have the will power to hang. Overall an okay run for this time of year.

A.M. - Was hoping to go outside for a decent-lengthed run, but ended up sleeping in and the snow was coming down in force. My wife was the smart one. She got up early and got her run in before the snow began falling. I spent about 40 minutes shoveling the thick snow off my driveway and walks and decided that an outside run would just end up being a dodgy slush-fest. So I wussed-out and decided to take it inside.

Pretty good treadmill run at the Life Centre. All flat:

5 minutes @ 9.5 mph,
5 mins @ 10.0,
20 mins @ 10.5,
20 mins @ 11.0,
5 mins @ 11.5,
5 mins @ 10.0

Felt good. I really need to use the PureFlows for my treadmill runs more often. Nice light, plush ride. The low heel drop combined with a decent clip works the calves pretty good.

A.M. - Bosque del Paseo run down in Albuquerque. The weather said 25 degrees when I started and it was definitely cold, but not that cold. I woke up this morning with that feeling that you know you're getting sick. Throat a little sore, achy, a little headache. Started the run real slow and kept it that way the whole run. Was feeling pretty good by half way into it and was glad that I didn't succomb to sleeping in. The trail portion (the paved Bosque del Paseo trail) of the run is awesome. But the 2 miles on the Central Avenue going out and coming back kind of sticks. The road is pretty busy, so you're forced to run mostly on the sidewalk. But because of all the driveways you're constantly running on an uneven surface. By the last 0.1 of my run, my right knee decided it had enough of the undulations and it really started to hurt. Luckily it was right at the end of the run and was able to stop. It's been a little sore today. I hope its nothing serious, I don't think it is. I've got a compression sleeve on it right now. I'm planning on running in the morning, but we'll see how it feels....and see how my cold progresses. No sense pushing anything right now. I wore the PureFlows today which have a ~4mm drop. I'll swing to the other end of the spectrum tomorrow and wear my Precisions which have huge heel (~13mm drop); see if that helps anything.

A.M.  - Sick...Yikes! Woke up with a huge sore throat. Achy, not fun. I'm sure it'll get worse before it gets better. Oh well, with my kids both being sick and some co-workers too, and all the traveling, it was bound to happen. I've actually been fortunate to have not been sick for quite some time. It'll just have to run its course.

Made it down to the Life Centre and only had it in me to do a short easy run. All flat:

20 minutes @ 8.0 mph,

10 mins @ 8.5

10 mins @ 9.0

Just running today at all was a victory. Knee felt fine, but I'm wearing the sleeve again for a little compression therapy.

A.M. - Still feeling like trash due to the cold. Ran on the treadmill at the Life Centre, with limited lung capacity:

5 minutes @ 9.0 mph, flat

5 mins @ 9.5, flat

5 mins @ 10.0, flat

5 mins @ 10.0, 0.5 incline

5 mins @ 10.0, 1.0 incline

5 mins @ 10.0, 1.5 incline

5 mins @ 10.0, 2.0 incline (had enough of the incline at this point)

10 mins @ 10.0, flat (even this segment felt tough)

5 mins @ 9.0, flat

5 mins @ 9.5, flat

5 mins @ 10.0, flat

Was happy to have run for 60 mins and got in at least 9 miles.

A.M. - Rang in Thanksgiving with a nice running date with my wife at the Thankful 13 Half Marathon in Lehi/American Fork. The last time we actually ran together was last Thanksgiving at the Human Race 5K.

My sister in-law came to our house early this morning to stay with the kids. We got down to the race at ~7:15 and got signed-up. It was windy and cold and I was beginning to think I was severely under-dressed, but by mile 4 I felt dressed perfectly.

At the start, I saw Walter, a few ward members (Angela Scott, Kendra Davis, Jamie Ross), and a few other familiar faces. There seemed to be a fair turn-out, but not a ton of people for the innagural running of this race. Most folks probably had the same idea we did... burn a few calories running a half marathon this morning and feel more justified this afternoon as we gorge ourselves!

The start and finish is at the MATC which is close to Thanksgiving Point. The first mile is running in a west/north direction on Ashton Blvd and Executive Pkwy. Then you go over the train tracks and start going south. The remainder of the run is through neighborhoods, mostly on the Provo/Jordan River Parkway Trail. At around mile 6.5, you do a little loop and start heading back north along a similar, but not the exact same, route as you had come out. The course is mostly flat with a handful of rollers and a few sections of moderate climbs/descents.  Lots of turns and winding around. To race it, I definitely wouldn't dub this a PR course. Especially on a windy day like today. I haven't seen what the winning time was yet.

Linds did a great job. Her goal, given today's conditions, was to break 2 hours. She set the pace the whole way. My job was to provide the moral support. The first 7 miles were real consistent at just over 8 minute miles. Miles 8-12 were considerably slower because of the strong headwind. The last mile was faster. We ended up coming in about ~1:51, well ahead of the goal.

Great morning. Lots of fun to do a chill run and be with my wife. So grateful for her, my wonderful family, and the whole host of other blessings in my life. Happy Thanksgiving!

A.M. - Extended my 15-mile route by a mile. This was my longest run since SGM. Pretty good mileage week for me for this time of year. The temps were pretty cold starting out but warmed up to the point where I felt maybe a little over-dressed toward the end. While running north on Wasatch, it looked like there was quite a bit of haze setting in over the city and north end of the valley, but where I was at and to the west of me it was nice and clear. I've never really noticed half and half conditions like that before. Usually, it seems like the whole valley is hazy or its not.
