2014 TENTATIVE RACING SCHEDULE:
TBD

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run 6-days a week and maintain a decent base level of fitness. Upwards of 50-60 per week would be great. Adjust to my new work position, use time wisely, and keep negative stress at bay. Hopefully make a good run at Ogden this spring.

Balance family, work, running, and the other important things in my life.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy running and continue doing it consistently. Stay healthy and avoid injury as much as possible. Have fun!

Continue chasing PRs while I still can, particularly in the marathon and half marathon. Explore new races, improve training, build friendships, and learn from the wisdom and experience of the numerous great runners here in Utah. Run well into my old age.

Personal:

I live in Sandy, UT with my wife (Lindsay) and 2 kids. I love running the roads through my neighborhood and near Little Cottonwood Canyon. I also do a fair amount of treadmill running at the Life Centre Athletic Club. Aside from running, I love road and moutain cycling.

Hobbler Half Marathon

Finally! My first race this year with no big headwind (See Moab 1/2 and UV 1/2) and one that I feel somewhat decent about the outcome. I felt good this morning and really enjoyed the course. Fun and pretty well organized race. Definitely one that I'll recomment and look forward to doing again in the future. Finished 4th overall behind Kyle Perry (1:08:51), Fritz (1:09:23), and Seth Wold (1:11:19). Compared to the Moab 1/2 and UV 1/2 earlier this year, I felt a little more speed in the legs and can tell my conditioning is getting better. Obviously, the lack of the headwind today was a big positive factor compared to those races and this course is definitely faster than Moab 1/2 (but maybe not UV 1/2). Fitness is still not to the level that I was at this time last year, but it seems to be heading in the right direction. I had a good 8-mile cool-down with Fritz after the race. He is an absolute stud and I having nothing but respect and admiration for the dude. He put up another great race/time today, as expected.

Splits and brief narrative are given below. There's an obvious progressive slowdown that largely corresponds with the change in the race terrain and general fatiguing:

1 - 5:18 (Kyle, Fritz, Seth, and Steve Sumison quickly form the lead pack. I'm alone and 5-10 seconds back)
2 - 5:16 (cruising down the fork; steadily but slowly gaining ground on the 4th place Steve. I'm pretty confident I will catch him eventually)
3 - 5:19 "  "
4 - 5:19 "  "
5 - 5:12 "  "
6 - 5:22 (out of the fork and into the main channel of the canyon, briefly on a dirt path (slight loss of momentum) and then onto a paved path. I lose sight of Kyle, Fritz, and Seth but am still closing in on Steve)
7 - 5:21 (rollers)
8 - 5:26 (weaving path; took a GU at about 8.6, should have taken it a little earlier)
9 - 5:26  (more weaving path)
10 - 5:28 (back on the main road, pretty straight, slight down. I finally pass Steve Sumison here to take 4th place).
11 - 5:35 (pretty straight, slight down. Was feeling good, split should have been faster, but my legs were losing speed. I can see Seth up in the distance whose fallen off the back of the other two. He's still aways up there, can I catch him?..)
12 - 5:33 (same as 11, but more pronounced decline, closing in on Seth)
13 - 6:00 (slightly up jaunt back up to the park, bad split, getting closer to Seth but I know there's not enough course to catch him)
0.1 - 0:59 (my Garmin measured this 0.19 miles)

Garmin distance: 13.19; 1:11:39; 5:25 ave./mi. I'm curious if anyone else measured the course a tad long? Maybe I just ran the tangents bad. Mile markers seemed to be pretty close except the last little bit.

I should go out and ride tonight. I've got the energy, but my motivation is lacking.

Great race Justin. I remember that last mile being tough last year. Do you have a fall marathon planned? I remember you did Pocatello last year right?

From JPark on Sat, Jul 07, 2012 at 17:41:27 from 174.52.34.169

Yeah, I've got Pocatello and St. George on tap again this year. Are you doing either of those?

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Jul 07, 2012 at 17:49:15 from 24.10.249.165

You know, I've finished 2nd at the Pocatello Half the last two years and I really like the race. So it will be hard to pass up.I think I might do TOU and the Poky Half is perfect prep for that.

I heard from Fritz that you might be joining us up at Alta on Wednesday?

From Fritz on Sat, Jul 07, 2012 at 20:44:15 from 76.27.28.67

Great job Justin and thanks again for the making the cool down enjoyable. Your running and biking this summer are impressive and I am sure you will dominate LOTOJA and run a great fall marathon.

Rob's x-country team meets at Alta on Wednesday nights at 6 for a 9-10 mile trail run in case you are interested. We usually meet at the park n' ride at 6200 and carpool up at 5:30. If that is out of the way we could pick you up at the mouth of the canyon. Just something to consider.

Great race. I ran that race last year and the last "tenth" was way long! I didn't have a garmin at the time, so I don't know how it measured last year overall. That last mile is tough though, I think I was 6:00 on that mile too last year. In fact, your splits and overall time look very similar to mine from last year (and I took 4th too). You are putting in some great miles and workouts, keep it up.

Congrats on a great race! It's good to see you gaining strength and running so well. It looks like I may run into you at the Pocatello marathon--I'm planning to pace a couple of my buddies to a faster Boston qualifying time.

BTW - If you have any inclination toward doing Boston next year, I have reserved a nice home with 10 beds less than 3 miles from the finish line. Looks like I still have 3-4 more spots available. (Invitation is open you Riley, Fritz, and Rob as well)

From Fritz on Mon, Jul 09, 2012 at 17:23:13 from 65.116.116.6

That is very tempting especially considering I have never run it and I don't want to be beat by a bunch of kenyans at the SLC Marathon next year. :) When do you need a commitment?

From JPark on Mon, Jul 09, 2012 at 17:35:36 from 167.219.0.140

Scott - Yes, the Boston offer is very tempting. I've never done it either. Let us know when you need a commitment. It would be good to have strong Utah FRB representation next year like there was this year.

Fritz and Rob - Unfortunately, I'm in Denver until late Wednesday, but I'd most likely be interested in joining you next week. I assume you'll be doing it next week too?

Riley - Thanks. You are a fantastic runner. Eventhough your time/splits last year were similar to mine this year, based on what you've done so far this year, its clear you're much stronger than me. I look forward to meeting you in person soon. I hope your knee is holding up.
