2014 TENTATIVE RACING SCHEDULE:
TBD

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run 6-days a week and maintain a decent base level of fitness. Upwards of 50-60 per week would be great. Adjust to my new work position, use time wisely, and keep negative stress at bay. Hopefully make a good run at Ogden this spring.

Balance family, work, running, and the other important things in my life.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy running and continue doing it consistently. Stay healthy and avoid injury as much as possible. Have fun!

Continue chasing PRs while I still can, particularly in the marathon and half marathon. Explore new races, improve training, build friendships, and learn from the wisdom and experience of the numerous great runners here in Utah. Run well into my old age.

Personal:

I live in Sandy, UT with my wife (Lindsay) and 2 kids. I love running the roads through my neighborhood and near Little Cottonwood Canyon. I also do a fair amount of treadmill running at the Life Centre Athletic Club. Aside from running, I love road and moutain cycling.

A.M. - Standard Cottonwood Rd. route. No extra. Nice cool weather and relaxed. Averaged just under 7 minute pace.

I'm a little worried about the inner side of my left tibia. I've been noticing it lately. Not painful yet, but 'noticable'. It's kind of reminicent of the periosteal heave (as the sports doctor called it) that I had two summers ago at the same spot on the right side limited me for months and I'm convinced was a stress fracture. Something about my running style, the types of runs I'm doing, the shoes, or something must be putting extra burden on my lower legs. I'll be watching it closely and hopefully be disciplined enough to change things up, cut way back, or stop if it continues to progress. Not worth having a prolonged injury.

yes, be careful with that. i had a 'noticeable' tibia last spring that developed into a full-on stress fracture. it was a combination of a lot of things, but i am certain my shoes had something to do with it. i also seem to have very weak hamstrings, which somehow puts more stress on my lower legs (i'm not sure on the biomechanics, but this is what i have been told).

you may want to try heel/toe walking before your runs just to see if that helps loosen up your lower legs.

It can be tough to pull back on the training, but I'm with you, definitely not worth a prolonged injury. I'm putting out there that with a little rest, your leg will recover completely and you'll be even stronger.

I gave one of your treadmill workouts a go this morning--it's the toughest tempo work I've ever done. Thank you for the inspiration. I'm sure my body will need a couple of days to recover.

Thanks for the words. Allie, yeah, I'm going to be changing out some of my training shoes here real soon. Your comment on the hamstrings is interesting...Definitely something to consider. I'm going to try the heel/toe walking too.

Scott, hope you liked the run! With the shape you must be in with all the miles you're doing, I'm sure its easier for you than it is for me right now! I really enjoy following your posts.

It hasn't been easy for me to get the high miles and the speed workouts in the same week. I finished the workout today thinking "I'm sure this workout was much easier for Justin."

I could tell that I was doing something I'd never done before with 15 mins left. At 5 mins with the bump to 11.5, I was aware of exactly how much time I had left.

Now I've got to try one of your insane incline workouts.
